My name is Mark Davidoff, commonly known by the internet alias "Xebozone". I have always had an interest in music and music creation.
My fascination started when I played that first MIDI that came with Windows when I was under ten years old. A few years later, I started learning how midi works and I got my Sound Blaster Live! sound card. This was where I learned about soundfonts, and ever since then, I have always been trying to get my midis which I love to sound perfectly realistic, just as the original author intended.
Unfortunately, after all these years I have not yet found a music bank which does this, whether it is free or not. I have many sound banks, both free and not free and I have not been completely satisfied. I even recently tried out the Colossus bank (a massive 30gb bank, where 14gb were General Midi (GM) instruments) and was not completely satisfied in that it had missing instruments and the authors "cheated" by increasing the waveform sizes in places where it wouldn't be heard.
After trying Colossus, I still wanted to have the best soundfont in which to render my midis. I came to the conclusion that the only way I would achieve my dream was to create it myself and not wait for someone else to do it for me. But ...I didn't have all the resources to do it, nor did I know any one that would. To do so would require so much time and money that it wouldn't be worth it. I couldn't possibly buy myself a sound booth, equipment and instruments. I also had very little experience with the creation of soundfonts.
Then an idea hit me.
If I could get people to help with this project, then I wouldn't have to do everything myself! I was sure that there were thousands of dedicated people out there in the world...and I needed them to help me!
"Sonic Boom" was born.
I wanted to bring together the community to make something amazing; and to show all those companies that charge hundreds of dollars for a synth, this project will be free. If you use it for a commercial product, then it would be nice to pay some of the profit to me for my uptime and bandwidth and to put in a good word.
I designed this web site and I will function as the project administrator. I will also try to provide any resources that may be needed.
Please view everything you can before you contribute to the project, even if you feel that you do not need to. This includes the FAQ and the informational pages (when they are created). They contain the specifications for the project as well as tips and information to help you improve your understanding and your skills, even if you are highly skilled already.
